McLaren to appeal Hamilton penalty
07 September 2008 / Results / PhotosMcLaren has registered its intention appeal against Lewis Hamilton's 25-second penalty at the Belgian Grand Prix which cost the driver victory and dropped him to third place overall. The penalty cut his lead in the championship to two points.
"We have no option than to register our intention to appeal," a McLaren spokesperson told reporters at Spa. "We have studied the details and put them before the FIA stewards. They show that after cutting the chicane Lewis lifted off, he was six kph slower than Kimi. After conceding the lead he repositioned his car on the right and beat Kimi on the brakes going into the hairpin."
Under regulations the team has to register its intention to appeal while the race meeting is still in progress, but whether the team goes through with it in the coming days after all the inevitable discussions behind closed doors with the authorities, remains to be seen.
